Horse shows are great family entertainment, and as the Horse Show Capital of the World, OKC hosts more national and international equine championships than any other city in the world. One of those shows is the 2014 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity & Adequan North American Affiliate Championship Show, which is happening at State Fair Park Arena this week through Saturday, December 6.

For those unfamiliar with reigning, it's a judged event designed to show the kind of athleticism a horse needs to work a cow, but without the cow. Contestants are required to run one of thirteen approved patterns within the confines of the show arena. Each pattern includes whirling fast circles and the exciting sliding stops that are the hallmark of the reining horse. Here's a preview

Events are happening all week, but one of the most exciting is the NRHA Open World Championship Shootout this Thursday, December 4 at 7:00 p.m. The top open reining riders and horses will compete for a shot at the title of NRHA Open World Champion.

The World Barrel Racing Futurity rounds out the 2014 horse show calendar with exciting barrel racing action next week. For more information on horse shows in Oklahoma City, visit our horse show page.
