With the hustle and bustle of the Holiday Season, Canterbury focuses on the true meaning of Christmas. Because of many community requests, music by the two most well-known Baroque composers (Bach and Handel) will be showcased in Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s Magnificat. What would Christmas be without traditions? Canterbury’s Holiday performances have become part of many Oklahoman’s Christmas season year after year. This year experience Mary’s story told through Bach’s Magnificat and the coming of a savior joyously represented in Handel’s Messiah. Unfaltering in its eloquence, Messiah has been loved all over the world. Many feel that every single human being should hear a performance of this great work during their lifetime because of its profound impact. Handel wrote it in only 24 days and as he wrote the final monumental Amen, he confided later to a friend, “I think God has visited me!” Bach wrote his Magnificat for Christmas vespers, based upon Mary's words when she learns from the angel Gabriel that she will give birth to a Savior - “My soul doth magnify the Lord.” (With the Oklahoma City Philharmonic) This concert will be followed by a Holiday Reception in the Civic Center lobby.
