Famous for his West Side Story, Bernstein's monumental Mass (A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players, and Dancers) is a musical theatre work composed by Leonard Bernstein. In the tragic aftermath of her first husband's death, it was commissioned by Jacqueline Kennedy, and premiered on September 8, 1971. The performance was part of the opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of JFK's Presidency. An Oklahoma premiere, Canterbury's performance will be staged theatrically in partnership with Oklahoma City University School of Music. Cast includes the Mass Celebrant, Acolytes, Chorus, Children's Chorus, and Street Singers with onstage and offstage orchestra. The story relates the drama of a celebrant whose faith is simple and pure at first, but gradually becomes challenged under the weight of human misery, corruption, and the trappings of power. This Oklahoma premiere is a once in a lifetime performance! Through a combination of jazz and rock, Leonard Bernstein represents the human struggle with faith. This truly epic musical work is performed by street musicians, dance, chorus, staging and various characters creating an experience you won't want to miss. Mass is a testament to the doubts that all believers experience, reaffirmation of faith, and a final Praise and Peace.
