Urban Hike from Myriad Botanical Gardens to begin in March

Take a hike, literally, with a new Urban Hike beginning this spring at Myriad Botanical Gardens. Immediately after the regularly scheduled monthly Guided Walking Tour, instructors from the YMCA will lead participants on an hour-long hike through downtown Oklahoma City. Target locations will be announced prior to the hike. Bring water and wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Walk-ups are welcome. Geared towards adults, children and strollers are welcome to join.

The first urban hike is scheduled for Saturday, March 28 beginning at 11 a.m. with Jessica Brodmerkel, YMCA Downtown District health and wellness director. The route will traverse from the Gardens up Hudson Avenue to the Oklahoma City National Memorial Museum and Survivor Tree. After park rangers give a history lesson of the tree, the group will hike down 5th Street to the Edward L. Gaylord Downtown YMCA for a water stop. While there, participants will learn about the Y partnership with LiveStrong which assists those who are living with, through or beyond cancer.

Dates for the Urban Hike are March 28, May 30, July 25, and September 26. Each hike is free and begins at 11 a.m. and ends by noon.

Guided Walking Tours of the Gardens are held the last Saturday of the month from 10 to 11 a.m. Each month features different plants from the outdoor collection that thrive in our region, from year-round color to drought-tolerant choices. Participants meet in the South Lobby Visitor Center.

Free and open to the public, Myriad Botanical Gardens provides 15 acres of ornamental gardens and grounds that include a children’s garden and carousel, native prairie garden, shade gardens, tree and shrub collections, lake with terraced gardens and a diverse collection of ornamental flowering perennials and grasses.

The Gardens offer a variety of horticultural educational programs for all ages ranging from lectures, classes, workshops and walking tours to seasonal festivals. The grounds also feature The Crystal Bridge Conservatory, home to thousands of tropical and desert plants. With more than 500,000 visitors annually, the Gardens is managed by Myriad Gardens Foundation, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that partners with corporate and community groups to enhance the educational, aesthetic, cultural and economic development of Oklahoma City.
