The Oklahoma City Council agreed Tuesday to a $24.9 million contract with Brookville Equipment Corp., the Pennsylvania manufacturer that will build the MAPS 3 streetcars.

The contract is for five "modern" streetcars, low-floor trams that are to run a significant portion of the downtown route powered by on-board batteries instead of overhead wires.

Oklahoma City plans to exercise its option to buy a sixth streetcar, bringing the total to $28.9 million.

This is Oklahoma City's second dance with a streetcar manufacturer after the original preferred builder, INEKON Group a.s. of the Czech Republic, missed a deadline to submit financial guarantees.
