OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 29, 2016) – Remington Park is preparing to kick off its 28th annual Quarter Horse meet, including the return of Extreme Racing and the Kentucky Derby Hat Contest, and a record stakes schedule featuring more than $5.7 million in purses.
The Quarter Horse meet begins with live racing on March 11 and wraps up June 4. Regular racing will take place Thursdays through Sundays throughout the season.
This year, Remington Park is reaching out to its fans by offering several new promotions, including a special open house during opening weekend; a league night promotion for those wanting to blend a little friendly camaraderie with their horse racing wagers; a series of Country & Western-themed nights; and several special race days dedicated to the track’s Hispanic fans.
“We want to make Quarter Horse season exciting for all our fans – and offer some new promotions to encourage some fresh faces to make it out to the track,” said Dale Day, track announcer. “This season really has something for everyone.”
All of Remington Park’s promotions and events lead up to the season-ending showcase: the $1.1 million Heritage Place Futurity, set for closing day on June 4.
For Remington Park fans, the road to the mega-card closing night includes one of the track’s most popular events, Extreme Racing. Returning on April 24 for its seventh installment, Extreme Racing will feature a full slate of live Quarter Horse races combined with entertaining sprints by zebras, camels, ostriches, miniature donkeys and Clydesdale horses.
Two weeks later, ladies and gentlemen can visit Remington to watch the 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby on the Coors Light Super Screen, while also showing off their best Derby attire for the annual Kentucky Derby Hat and Bowtie Contest. All the festivities are set for May 7, with cash prizes for contest winners.
Setting the stage for those big weekends will be opening weekend, March 11-13, featuring a Remington Park Open House. Track guests can visit a series of booths to learn more about all the promotions and amenities offered at the track, as well as take in an exciting weekend of live racing. First-race times for opening weekend will be 6 p.m. on March 11; 5 p.m. on March 12; and 1:30 p.m. on March 13.
Opening weekend will also be a time to celebrate all the cowboys and cowgirls in the crowd. Remington Park will offer special Western-themed dining options all weekend and encourages fans to sport their best boots, hats and Western attire in celebration of horse racing’s Country & Western heritage. Back in the Saddle will continue each Friday evening throughout the season.
Remington Park is also recognizing its Hispanic fans in 2016 with the Fiesta at the Park promotion, set for March 20, April 16 and May 15. Fiesta at the Park will feature special food options, visiting Mexican regional bands and racing tip sheets offered in Spanish.
Continuing all through the season will be Remington Park’s Friday Night Racing League, combining the competitiveness and camaraderie of your local bowling night with the excitement of live horse racing. Guests can form teams and wager on the races to win $200 weekly cash prizes as they build up their stats in pursuit of the season league title and a $1,000 cash prize.
Key racing dates for the 2016 Quarter Horse meet include the historic 75th Oklahoma Futurity and the Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby on March 26; the Remington Park Futurity and the Remington Park Derby on April 23; the Grade 2 Bank of America Oklahoma Challenge Championship on May 22; and the Heritage Place Futurity, the Grade 1 Remington Park Championship and the Grade 2 Heritage Place Derby on June 4.
