Stars' Abbott, Corcoran honored by OKC Convention & Visitors Bureau
OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma City University athletic director Jim Abbott and spirit squads coach Brandy Corcoran were recognized by the Oklahoma City Convention and Visitors Bureau in the fifth annual Hometown Heroes Luncheon on Wednesday at the Waterford Marriott Hotel.
Abbott and Corcoran were honored for their part in showcasing and promoting tourism in Oklahoma City by attracting sporting events to the community.
Oklahoma City University annually hosts national events including the Head of the Oklahoma Regatta, Junior National Duals and Women's Folkstyle Wrestling Championships among almost 50 events held on the university campus that draw visitors to the city.
"We're proud to represent Oklahoma City on a broader scale and enjoy having the opportunity to show our city off to visitors from around the country," Abbott said. "I especially appreciate that the CVB recognizes the importance of the events that we bring to town and the positive effect that it has on the local economy. Our guests love coming to Oklahoma City, and the popularity of our community increases every year."
Among the events brought to campus in 2013-14 were the NAIA West Qualifying Cheer/Dance Championships, NAIA cheerleading and pom/dance championships, the STUNT championships, the Sooner Athletic Conference baseball and softball tournaments and the NAIA Softball Championship Opening Round Oklahoma City Bracket.
The OKC CVB acknowledged Abbott's creation of the Business of Small College Athletics workshop and helping form the Greater Oklahoma City Sports Consortium, a group of Oklahoma City sports leaders working together to bring events to town.
The bureau recognized OCU wrestling coach Archie Randall for his achievements in promoting tourism in the city at the 2011 Hometown Heroes Luncheon.
