¡Paseo! (Ride!): Caballeros, Vaqueros and Gauchos in American Films
In an effort to explore the origins and evolution of the American cowboy from Europe and Africa to the Americas, Michael R. Grauer, McCasland Chair of Cowboy Culture/Curator of Cowboy Collections and Western Art, presents four films about caballeros, vaqueros and gauchos in Mexico and Central and South America. Although romanticized to an extent, these films offer examples of Hispanic horseback clothing, tools, gear and horse furniture, as well as techniques and lifeways unique to particular herding cultures.

    Ride, Vaquero! (1953)
After the Civil War, King Cameron (Howard Keel) moves to Texas, settles down with his wife (Ava Gardner) and purchases a cattle ranch. Life is disrupted when two outlaws, Rio and Esqueda, face a showdown over how to evict the new settlers in this action-packed story of mercy and betrayal. 90 minutes. Appropriate for ages 10+.
