We come here to remember. It’s been 29 years and most Oklahomans know where they were and what they were doing at the exact moment on April 19,1995. Like most cities hit with tragedy, its people came together to help, heal, and remember. It left a hole in the city and the hearts of its citizens but couldn’t destroy people coming together and to help one another. #weremember #oklahoma #okc #april19 #okcstrong #okcnationalmemorialandmuseum #oklahomacitynationalmemorial #oklahomacity

💙 #weremember #GuetodeVarsovia #jewish

On this day 29 years ago the landscape of Oklahoma City and the nation as we knew it changed forever. On this April 19th we remember those who were affect by the senseless act of violence against hundreds of innocent people going about their daily routine.

Al Slattery Masonry Inc. is honored to be partners with the Oklahoma City National Memorial to help maintain the grounds where the building once stood. When our crews show up there to work, they are always reminded of the mission of the memorial, “We come here to remember those who were killed, those who survived, and those changed forever. May all who leave here know the impact of violence. May this memorial offer comfort, strength, peace, hope and serenity.”

WARSAW GHETTO UPRISING
On April 19, 1943, the Warsaw ghetto uprising began after German troops and police entered the ghetto to deport its surviving inhabitants. Jewish insurgents inside the ghetto resisted these efforts. This was the largest uprising by Jews during World War II and the first significant urban revolt against German occupation in Europe. By May 16, 1943, the Germans had crushed the uprising and deported surviving ghetto residents to concentration camps and killing centers.

KEY FACTS
1
About 700 young Jewish fighters participated in what became known as the Warsaw ghetto uprising. During the uprising, the civilian population in the ghetto also resisted German forces by refusing to assemble at collection points and burrowing in underground bunkers.

2
At least 7,000 Jews died fighting or in hiding in the ghetto. Approximately 7,000 Jews were captured by the SS and police at the end of the fighting. These Jews were deported to the Treblinka killing center where they were murdered.

3
After the Warsaw ghetto uprising, the SS and police deported approximately 42,000 Jews to forced-labor camps and to the Lublin/Majdanek concentration camp. Most of these people were murdered in November 1943 in a two-day shooting operation known as Operation Harvest Festival (Erntefest).

A total of 168 individual lives were lost—and countless others changed forever—29 years ago on this day.

I had never heard of the 1995 bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City—until I came to OU to study journalism. My sophomore year I worked as a production assistant on an HBO Max documentary called ‘An American Bombing: The Road to April 19’ that debuted this week and seeks to tell the story to a new generation. And today, on the cusp of my graduation, I had the honor of covering the 29th anniversary ceremony. More specifically, I profiled a man named Mark Bays. Mark dedicated his career to preserving the Survivor Tree, an American elm that was damaged in the blast 29 years ago. Now, it towers over the memorial as a beaming sigil of hope against hate and violence.

I will carry the stories of those impacted by this tragedy with me as I depart from Oklahoma and begin my career in journalism. I cannot dream of a story more apropos to cap off my college career.
