An art show & curated films July 28 - 29 in Oklahoma City
Fascinated by the American idea that foreign means decorative regardless of the original intent, Fowler was spurred to created Cowboy Swordfight! – showcasing western films and art that smash cultures together.
“…when it comes to the written word, Americans seem to be convinced that foreign = decorative. It doesn't really matter what the writing says. All that matters is the image that the words accompany,” said Jack Fowler in his artist’s statement. “Give us the right image, and we project vague meaning onto the unreadable characters, usually something exotic, something stylish, something brave.”
Throughout the weekend, Fowler has chosen five brave and stylish western films that push the boundaries of the genre itself. An art show, featuring 10 new works by the artist, will be on display in the theatre lobby throughout the weekend.
“We've got cowboy movies set in feudal Japan and gunfighter paintings based on old Bollywood western posters and Office Space quotes emblazoned in Chinese that drift over the open skies of Monument Valley,” says Fowler.
Fowler is an artist, writer and radio show host living in Oklahoma City. A self-taught painter, he lists his primary influences as Eyvind Earle, Andy Warhol, Dorothea Lange and Bo Jackson. His work is banned from the art gallery at the Oklahoma State Capitol.
