The 2020 Festival Marks the 15th Anniversary Celebration
The Fiestas de las Américas Festival held annually by Calle Dos Cinco in Historic Capitol Hill will be moving to an online-only format due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
“The highest priority is the health and safety of our Fiestas participants, sponsors and volunteers. In response to the pandemic, our Historic Capitol Hill Board of Directors has decided to convert our Fiestas 15th Anniversary Festival into a Virtual Celebration. Over the years, festival-goers have been able to experience and learn about the diverse cultures that are represented within our Latino community. This year, the festival will make that kind of inspiration accessible from home," Gloria Torres, Executive Director Calle Dos Cinco in Historic Capitol Hill.
The virtual celebration will launch on Sunday, September 27th and be a week-long cultural celebration ending on October 3rd, rather than the festival's traditional one day event. “In these difficult times and especially during Hispanic Heritage Month, we need a Fiestas celebration to uplift the Latino community. Fiestas de las Americas has become an annual tradition in our city and we’re excited to
share this festival with a larger audience through a virtual experience. We know it will make the Festival stronger and more diverse when it returns to the streets of OKC,” Miriam Campos, Fiestas de las Américas Event Chair & Historic Capitol Hill Board Member.
This year’s Fiestas Honorary Chair, Mucki Wright, also expressed how proud she was to be a part of this event that has had an incredible impact in the lives of so many in our community, especially our youth, “It is so important for our youth to feel proud of where they come from, their heritage, this event has given them an opportunity to showcase their culture and a sense of pride”.
You will not see the colorful parade of floats coming down South Walker this year, the folkloric dance group presentations on stage and you will not be able to dance to LIVE music on Calle Dos Cinco. You won’t be able to eat street tacos, empanadas, roasted corn, churros, and other Latin American cuisine found at Fiestas. But you can enjoy all of this LIVE, via social media and
YouTube.
