Every Brilliant Thing

An Oklahoma professional premiere

By Duncan Macmillan

With Jonny Donahoe

Civic Center Music Hall CitySpace Theatre

“…very charming…offers sentimentality without shame…guaranteed to keep your eyes brimming…[The script] balance[s] acuity and affability…with unobtrusive artistry…captivating…”

—NY Times

CityRep opens its eighteenth season with the immersive and uplifting Every Brilliant Thing, by Duncan Macmillian with Jonny Donahoe.

One of the most-produced new plays in America, Every Brilliant Thing strikes a delicate balance between sobering loss and cathartic laughter. Adapting the hit off-Broadway one-character show of the same name written by Duncan Macmillan, the play recounts a life lived in the shadow of suicide. Every Brilliant Thing heart-wrenching yet humorous presentation about depression and the lengths we will go to for those we love. In this acclaimed show, a young boy attempts to cure his mother’s depression by creating a list of the best things in the world. The list grows as he progresses from childhood (“Ice Cream”) and adolescence (“Star Trek”), to college (“Surprises”) and marriage (“Falling in Love”). But when life deals a bitter blow, the list proves to be helpful to the son in ways that it could never be for the mother. A profoundly intimate, immersive, life-affirming theatre experience.

A Doll’s House part 2

An Oklahoma premiere

By Lucas Hnath

Civic Center Music Hall CitySpace Theatre

“…lucid and absorbing…Modern in its language, mordant in its humor and suspenseful in its plotting…the play judiciously balances conflicting ideas about freedom, love and responsibility.”

—Time Out NY

In the final scene of Ibsen’s 1879 groundbreaking masterwork, Nora Helmer makes the shocking decision to leave her husband and children, and begin a life on her own. This climactic event—when Nora slams the door on everything in her life—instantly propelled world drama into the modern age.

In A DOLL’S HOUSE, PART 2, many years have passed since Nora’s exit. Now, there’s a knock on that same door. Nora has returned. But why? And what will it mean for those she left behind?

Broadway leading lady and CityRep affiliated artist Stacey Logan returns to our stage in this brilliant new, Tony award-winning play.

Sexy Laundry

An Oklahoma premiere

By Michele Riml

Civic Center Music Hall CitySpace Theatre

After twenty-five years of marriage, the emergence of love handles and receding hairlines, Alice and Henry have hit a physical plateau. With a Sex for Dummies guidebook in hand, Alice convinces Henry into a weekend of alone time in the hopes of seducing him and unearthing her inner vixen. Henry, however, wants to keep things the way they are - comfortable and easy. Exploring every fantasy from leather to lace, Alice and Henry portray every couple's desire to grow together but maintain individuality.

Armed with a copy of “Sex for Dummies,” Alice and Henry check themselves into a trendy spa hotel with a mission: to jump-start their 25-year marriage. Time has taken its toll – so have kids, stress and gravity. In desperation, Alice has decided that they either make this final, major effort to save their marriage, or they get a divorce and go their separate ways. Can they embrace all the wild suggestions Alice keeps pulling from her handy-dandy marriage-saving manual? Does Alice have the courage to unearth her inner vixen? Is Henry prepared to see his fifty-plus wife, and mother of his children, dressed in black leather?

Alice and Henry share their erotic fantasies, exchange recriminations, and take turns confessing the details of their mid-life crises as the play flips from comedic to serious and back again. Henry and Alice’s touching and hilarious rediscovery of themselves and their inspiring efforts to restore their marriage will resonate with audiences of all ages. By turns poignant and laugh-out-loud funny, Sexy Laundry is a romantic comedy guaranteed to strike a deep and resounding chord.

A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder

An Oklahoma professional premiere

Book and Lyrics by Robert L. Freedman

Music and Lyrics by Steven Lutvak

Based on A Novel by Roy Horniman

Civic Center Music Hall Freede Little Theatre

A distant heir to a family fortune sets out to speed up the line of succession by using a great deal of charm... and a dash of murder.

A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder is the knock-'em-dead, uproarious hit and the most-nominated show of the 2014 season. With ten Tony nominations and four wins, including Best Musical, Book, Direction and Costumes, it also earned seven Drama Desk Awards (including Best Musical), four Outer Critics Circle Awards (including Best Musical) and one Drama League Award (Best Musical).

When the low-born Monty Navarro finds out that he's eighth in line for an earldom in the lofty D'Ysquith family, he figures his chances of outliving his predecessors are slight and sets off down a far more ghoulish path. Can he knock off his unsuspecting relatives without being caught and become the ninth Earl of Highhurst? And what of love? Because murder isn't the only thing on Monty's mind....

A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder is a murderous romp filled with unforgettable music, non-stop laughs and a scene-stealing role for one actor playing all eight of the doomed heirs who meet their ends in the most creative and side-splitting ways.

CityRep co-founder Jonathan Beck Reed returns to our stage for this truly original and fresh new comedy that will delight audiences and leave them begging for more.
