OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Skirvin Hilton Hotel and Paseo Arts Association are pleased to announce LaQuincey Reed as its 10th artist for their Artist in Residence SPACE program. LaQuincey is a figurative sculptor who lives and works in Oklahoma and will work in the historic hotel’s studio space until October 2022.
LaQuincey began his artistic career as a painter, but found he could express himself best through clay. While pursuing a studio arts degree at the University of Oklahoma, he discovered a love of sculpting and the business that revolves around it. After graduation, he worked as a sculptor assistant on the Oklahoma Landrun monument. He has been commissioned to complete works for the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma Baptist University, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Cleveland County courthouse, the Oklahoma State Capitol and other institutions. He exhibits his artwork across the country and his work was part of Brookgreen Gardens’ exhibit on Emerging Stars in American Sculpture.
His work is three-dimensional figurative art and currently, his focus is on Blacks in the West and their impact and influence to the West. “I feel that my work fits well with the scope of the Artist In Residence program which is to bring the arts to the community, educate, entertain and inspire. In the space, viewers will be able to observe the process of creation of work from lump of clay and wire to a full figurative work with movement and emotion that tells a story.”
“We are proud to again partner with the Paseo Arts Association showcasing our city’s diverse art community and providing a platform to challenge, enlighten and creatively engage our guests,” said Kyle Lippe, General Manager of The Skirvin. “It was immediately apparent that LaQuincey’s energy and fresh approach to engaging others with his unique art was perfect for the continuation of this program. We are thrilled to have him in our space and cannot wait for everyone to experience his art.”
SPACE is a unique urban artist in residence program in which members of the Paseo Arts Association can apply for a yearlong on-site residency in Oklahoma City’s premier downtown landmark hotel. The Skirvin provides a working art studio where the artist can create their work and allows hotel guests and visitors the opportunity to observe and participate in the creative process.
“We are delighted to welcome LaQuincey to our SPACE, Skirvin Paseo Artists Creativity Exposition, at the Skirvin Hilton! This is a partnership that began in 2012 and continues to be highly sought after and was the first of its kind in the state of Oklahoma,” said Amanda Bleakley, executive director of the Paseo Arts Association.”
