Exhibition welcomes largest crowds of last five years to Museum

Due to incredibly popular demand, the Museum will add extended hours to the final weekends of “Van Gogh, Monet, Degas: The Mellon Collection of French Art from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts,” as well as new public tours. Sundays in September, the Museum will open two hours early – at 10 a.m. – to accommodate as many visitors as possible before the exhibition closes Sept. 22. Tickets for these additional hours are on sale now. Two public tours have been added for Thursday, Sept. 19 at 4 and 7:30 p.m. Tour tickets for will be on sale to the public beginning Aug. 19.

“Since June 22, we have welcomed over 25,000 people to the Museum for this exhibition,” said Michael Anderson, interim president & CEO. “'Van Gogh, Monet, Degas' is on track to be our biggest exhibition of the last five years, surpassing even ‘Fabergé: Jeweler to the Tsars’ and ‘Matisse in His Time.’ We are thrilled that the Oklahoma community has responded so enthusiastically to this incredible show and look forward to the coming weeks. Tickets for "Van Gogh, Monet, Degas," including tickets for the new extended hours, can be purchased online at www.okcmoa.com/vangogh, in person at the Museum or by calling (405) 236-3100. Tickets are sold in 15-minute increments and are $15. The exhibition is free for Museum members and active military members (as part of Blue Star Museums).

“Over 1,000 Oklahoma students have visited or will visit as part of our free PreK-12 school tours for this exhibition,” said Bryon Chambers, manager of tours and adult learning. “With more tours booked every day, we anticipate many more students will experience this exhibition free of charge before Sept. 22. We are grateful to Inasmuch Foundation and Crawley Petroleum for providing free tours and transportation reimbursement for Oklahoma school groups.”

Featuring more than 70 works by French and European masters, including Manet, Cézanne, Picasso and many more in addition to Van Gogh, Monet and Degas, this exhibition celebrates Paul and Rachel “Bunny” Mellon’s extraordinary gift of 19th and early 20th-century French art to the VMFA.
