OKLAHOMA CITY (June 30, 2023) – RIVERSPORT OKC will break ground on phase one of its $1.4M bike park expansion on Saturday, July 1, at 11 a.m. The new Oklahoma Trailhead and Bike Park will act as a hub for the newest expansion of the city’s trail system which will now run through Oklahoma City’s Boathouse District and will soon connect to the Katy Trail to the east.
“Creating accessible outdoor experiences for all is core to our mission at RIVERSPORT, and we are eager to break ground on this highly anticipated expansion,” said Mike Knopp, RIVERSPORT Executive Director. “The Oklahoma Trailhead and Bike Park expansion will allow us to provide amenities for trail users and expand our community programming.”
Slated to open in Spring 2024, the Oklahoma Trailhead and Bike Park expansion will include a new bike plaza, trail expansion, community garden, and outdoor classroom. Shipping containers will be used to create a unique gathering place that includes a welcome center, a coffee shop and ADA-compliant restrooms.
One of the more unique features of the project is a new elevated trail that will travel across the rooftops of the shipping containers. Once finished, cyclists can make a complete 80-mile loop around Oklahoma City on paved trails as well as access revamped mountain bike trails and jump lines.
Funding for the project is being provided by a grant from the Oklahoma Recreational Trails Program, the Oklahoma City Community Foundation and several anonymous donors. The project was designed by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, and Burnett Construction is the general contractor for the project.
