Oklahoma City, OK (August 16, 2024) – The Paseo Arts Association proudly announces the September exhibits in the Paseo Arts and Creativity Center! These exhibits will open on Sept. 6 during First Friday Gallery Walk from 6-9pm at 3024 Paseo. These include The Other Side in Gallery I, Paseo Photofest in Gallery II and To Be Continued in Gallery III.
Photographers VC Torneden and Melinda Green Harvey have collaborated to present The Other Side, an ongoing project covering the historic Route 66. The project has been in process for three years, aiming to conclude in 2026 to commemorate the Mother Road’s centennial. The Other Side aims to bring a fresh perspective on Route 66 by taking a deeper look at its overlooked importance. Torneden’s photos bring a sense of familiarity as she has used Route 66 as a primary subject in her work for more than a decade, giving her an encyclopedic knowledge of the road and its landmarks. Harvey has never traveled Route 66 before this project, but has used her photography to pivot the small-town life and how it devolved since Route 66’s decertification.
Paseo PhotoFest is the PAA’s annual juried photography exhibition that takes place each September. This exhibit showcases all types of photography, including film and digital processes, as well as mixed media including photography. This year’s juror is Andy Mattern. Mattern is a visual artist working in the expanded field of photography. His photographs and installations dissect the medium itself, reconfiguring expectations of photography's basic ingredients and conventions. This year’s PhotoFest is sponsored by Red River Digital.
OKC Artist Brother Joshua explores the issues of incarceration and slavery with his exhibit, To Be Continued. Brother Joshua is a conceptual artist who aims to use his work to convey sociological issues and ignite an emotional response in the viewer. This exhibit showcases artwork that presents the perspectives of the criminalized, how they’re affected by loopholes in the American Justice System and how this influences the ideas of capitalism, white supremacy and positions of power and control.
