Oklahoma City prides itself on being a pet-friendly destination. We love our furry friends just as much as anyone else, so we rounded up some of the top places in the Modern Frontier to get out and get active with your dog. From beautiful urban parks to colorful districts, there are some great places to let your four-legged family members get their energy out when you visit OKC.
Scissortail Park & Myriad Gardens
A massive 70-acre metropolitan park, Scissortail is one of the most popular places to walk your dog in Oklahoma City. There are multiple walking trails with a great view of the city skyline, a pet-friendly burger joint and even a dog park located on the grounds. Stop by on Saturday mornings or Wednesday nights to enjoy a farmers' market that is also dog friendly. Just across the street is the Myriad Gardens, a floral masterpiece in downtown OKC. Myriad Gardens also has a dog park of its own, allowing visitors to let your dog stop and smell the roses as you enjoy the beautiful sights around this urban oasis.
Lake Hefner
Located in northwest OKC, Lake Hefner is a beautiful place to take your dog for a longer jaunt. With a nine-mile walking trail around the lake, you can get your pet’s energy out while enjoying a beautiful view of the sunset on the water. Hungry afterwards? Stop by one of multiple restaurants around the lake for a bite to eat or checkout the nearby Chisholm Creek for an even wider selection of dining options.
Will Rodgers Gardens
One of the Modern Frontier’s most stunning public parks, Will Rodgers Gardens features a gorgeous, 2-acre garden filled with incredible flora in addition to a pristine pond that adds to the peacefulness of this hidden gem. Originally a dairy farm in the early 20th century, city government purchased the land in 1912 and began crafting the wonderful park that sits at 3400 NW 36th Street. There is also an arboretum and a conservatory on the park grounds, making this the perfect setting for any dog-walker who wants to enjoy the beautiful wildlife on display.
Wheeler District
One of Oklahoma City’s most walkable districts, the Wheeler District has plenty of great places to walk your dog. The neighborhood streets are home to a weekly bike race and on Friday evenings, there is a local farmers market to enjoy while taking your pet for a stroll. Closer to the banks of the Oklahoma River is the Wheeler Ferris Wheel, which has a great view of the city skyline. While your furry friend can’t ride the wheel with you, the surrounding area is a great place to spend leisure time and enjoy the company of others coming to visit the district.
Oklahoma River Trail
Along the banks of the Oklahoma River is a well-kept, 13-mile walking and jogging trail that is perfect for man’s best friend. Running from Meridian and Portland Avenues along the Oklahoma River, there are plenty of sights to see on this route, including a nice view of the OKC skyline. With over six and a half miles of dedicated trails on the riverbanks, the Oklahoma River Trail is a calm, underrated spot to take your dog for a walk.
Indoor options
If the weather isn’t good enough to take your dog outside, check out Solo’s Park & Pub in Chisholm Creek or Bar K in the Boathouse District for some indoor fun. Solo's has an indoor dining area where your dog can join you, and Bar K's indoor area has more space to spread out and frolic with your furry friend.
