The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity is the premier event in the world of reining, drawing top riders and talented horses from all over the world to compete. Held annually in Oklahoma City, the NRHA Futurity showcases the speed, precision and athleticism of both horse and rider. This guide will help you understand what makes the NRHA Futurity so special and why you should attend this year’s NRHA Futurity Nov. 25 through Dec. 7!
What is Reining?
A reining competition showcases the skills and maneuvers required of a working ranch horse, but does so within the controlled environment of a show pen, where the maneuvers are precise, the audience is captivated and the judges are tasked with assessing every element of performance with a keen eye for accuracy and finesse.
Signature Reining Maneuvers
During the NRHA Futurity, the horses perform a series of required maneuvers, each designed to showcase their skill and training. Look out for these key maneuvers:
-
Circles: Horses must complete both small and large circles at different speeds.
-
Spins: In a spin, a horse pivots rapidly on its hind legs, moving in a tight circle. It’s an exciting maneuver that requires exceptional control and coordination.
-
Sliding Stops: One of the most dramatic and iconic moves in reining, the sliding stop occurs when a horse runs at speed and then slides to a stop, kicking up dust as it halts. It’s probably the most thrilling moment for spectators.
-
Rollbacks: After performing a sliding stop, the horse immediately reverses direction in a sharp, controlled movement.
Judges score these maneuvers based on their smoothness, accuracy and style. A flawless performance can earn a high score and put a competitor in contention for a championship title.
