Reining is an exciting, yet highly disciplined equestrian sport and one of the largest events in the industry is happening in June in Oklahoma City, the Horse Show Capital of the World!
The top athletes in reining from across the United States and more than a dozen other countries converge on the Modern Frontier for reining’s second-largest event, which boasts a total purse exceeding $1 million.
Have you ever seen a horse slide 30 feet? Or spin around in a circle so fast it looks like a blur? If not, you’re in for a treat when you head to Oklahoma State Fairgrounds June 11-22 for the 2025 6666 Ranch National Reining Horse Association Derby presented by Markel. This is the first time the event will take place in the new OG&E Coliseum!
Expect to see horses shinier and slicker than sports cars, and riders whose steel-eyed focus would rival those in any professional sport. It’s the best of the best vying for the top spot, and there can only be one winner. Of course, there is still plenty of time for brevity and fun, photo ops and shopping.
Freestyle Reining
One of the most exciting nights for spectators will be Thursday, June 19, when the $20,000 NRHA Invitational Freestyle presented by Visit OKC will be held. The event begins at 6 p.m. It features top reining horses and their riders performing all the signature reining moves in highly choreographed routines complete with music and costumes. Watch para riders take center stage in the Para Reining Championship—celebrating inclusivity and accessibility in equestrian sports.
Be careful, though! Many people have said that the reason they started reining was that they watched a freestyle competition. If you think you might be one of these, check out NRHA’s guide to reining for beginners.
Open and Non Pro Finals Nights
The Open Derby Finals will take place on Saturday, June 21, featuring NRHA Professionals competing for a $100,000 championship title. With over $470,000 in added money, the Open Derby promises to be an unforgettable evening! The Level 4 Finals are scheduled to begin at 5 pm.
On Friday, June 20, the Non Pro Finals will showcase riders competing for a $50,000 championship check, with more than $200,000 in added money. The Non Pro Finals will begin at 4 pm.
Shopping
Looking for your next western jacket or a new cowboy hat? Maybe a new pair of boots or a jewelry set? There will be vendors set up in the Bennett Event Center and throughout the barns. If you need a unique gift for Father’s Day, this would be one great place to look.
