Family-friendly celebration includes PBR Team Oklahoma Wildcatters, Ward Family Trick Ropers, hands-on activities and the return of The Cowboy: An Immersive Journey

OKLAHOMA CITY — [July 8, 2026] — The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum will celebrate National Day of the Cowboy from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 25, with a full day of family-friendly activities honoring the cowboy, one of America’s most enduring icons.

Created to recognize the contributions of cowboys and cowgirls to American history and culture, National Day of the Cowboy traces its roots to 2005, when the U.S. Senate designated Saturday, July 23, 2005, as “National Day of the American Cowboy.” The resolution recognized the cowboy’s role in helping establish the American West and celebrated the values, traditions and spirit associated with cowboy culture.

At The Cowboy, the celebration will bring the West to life with hands-on activities, live entertainment and memorable experiences for all ages. Guests can meet PBR Team Oklahoma Wildcatters in person and watch the Ward Family Trick Ropers wow the crowd with high-energy performances. Little buckaroos can ride a mechanical bull, race mini-barrels, toss giant horseshoes, make stick horses, pose for caricatures, get their faces painted and create take-home crafts.

“National Day of the Cowboy is a natural fit for this Museum because the cowboy is at the heart of our story,” said Seth Spillman, Chief Marketing Officer of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. “This event gives families a fun, hands-on way to celebrate Western heritage while connecting with the people, traditions and values that continue to shape American culture.”

The celebration also marks the return of The Cowboy: An Immersive Journey, the Museum’s bold 360-degree experience that surrounds visitors with the landscapes, stories and spirit of the American West. Featuring larger-than-life projections, sweeping soundscapes and historic imagery, the experience brings the story of the cowboy to life in a new way. The Cowboy: An Immersive Journey is a separately ticketed experience, and advance tickets are recommended.

National Day of the Cowboy activities are free for Museum members or included with general admission. Some activities may require an additional charge. The event is supported by Mr. Peter and Mrs. Susan Hoffman.
