Grab your hammock and some sunscreen. We’re headed to the lake!

Most people know Lake Hefner for its iconic Lighthouse on the east side, but there is so much more to this body of water than its insta-worthy spot! There are trails and parks and tucked away corners. You won’t believe you’re in OKC anymore while you explore Lake Hefner and its surrounding scenery, trails and courses.

Trails

There are two main trails near Lake Hefner -- Bert Cooper Trail and Lake Hefner Trail.

Bert Cooper Trail is a 1.9-mile trail around Stars & Stripes Park on the south side of the lake. This trail has a private parking lot, so it’s a great spot for young families to pop over, take a stroll and play at the park.

A full loop around the lake is Lake Hefner Trail. It’s 9.4 miles of beautiful views and easy terrain. Lots of lookouts border the lake, so stop to snap a picture while you bike, run or walk around the lake. A favorite, tucked away spot is Hobie Point, where you can watch sailboats cruise around.

Boating

RIVERSPORT is at Lake Hefner, too! On the south side of the lake near the marina, RIVERSPORT offers sailing experiences. You can find more information and sign up here. Just a short distance away at Hobie Point, RIVERSPORT also offers stand up paddle boarding and kayak rentals daily during the season (which is Memorial Day through the beginning of August).

You’ll need a city boating permit for all things that float on Lake Hefner. Oklahoma boat registration is also required for all water crafts, except for kayaks, canoes and paddle boats. Find information on boating regulations here. And remember to bring your personal life preservers. Safety first!

Fishing

Lake Hefner often gets overlooked for fishing because it is smack dab in the middle of a city. But don’t let that dissuade you from trying it out! It’s a well-stocked lake. Experts say – the earlier, the better. So get there early and be prepared to catch a lot of fish.

Oklahoma City Fishing License is required in addition to a State Fishing License, unless exempt.

Golf

Just off of West Wilshire Blvd. on the south side of Lake Hefner is the Lake Hefner Golf Club. The green fee is $27 per day, and there are two challenging courses to choose from-- the South and the North. The courses are suitable for all ages and skill levels. Both are dotted by water hazards as well as bunkered fairways and greens. Stop in the pro shop for all your gear needs and grab a bite to eat in the club. The burgers are great!

Dining

Remember that insta-worthy spot by the Lighthouse? Well, near that stretch of shoreline are several restaurants with lakefront views. Louie’s has casual vibes and a menu filled with American classics. Redrock Canyon Grill is a local favorite, and they have some of the best sunset views in the city. Mama Roja Mexican Kitchen serves familiar favorites like tamales, tacos and plentiful chips and salsa.

Enjoy lake life in the middle of OKC, and check out Lake Hefner before the summer ends!
